Why the official "3 working days" slips
The 3-day figure is the service target, not a guarantee - and it counts working days in Vietnam's timezone. Three things stretch it:
- Weekends and public holidays. The Immigration Department does not process on Saturdays, Sundays, or Vietnamese holidays. A Thursday submission before a holiday week can sit for 10+ days.
- Photo rejections. The portrait photo must be front-facing, glasses-free, on a plain background, in the exact ratio the portal specifies. Non-standard photos are the single biggest cause of delays and resubmission requests.
- Name-order mismatches. The portal asks for surname and given name in a specific order. Applicants who reverse them, or whose names contain accents the form drops, get flagged for manual review.
How to check your status
- Save the registration code shown when you submit - the portal does not email it reliably.
- Use the "Search" function on evisa.gov.vn with the code, your email, and date of birth.
- Status moves from "Processing" to "Granted Visa" with a PDF download link. Print it or keep the PDF offline - the counter wants the document, not a screenshot of the portal.
What actually speeds things up
- Apply early. Two weeks before departure removes nearly all stress. The e-visa is valid from the date you choose, so applying early costs nothing.
- Submit a technically clean file. Correct photo spec, name in passport order, exact entry port. A clean application clears in the stated window far more often.
- Double-check the entry port. The visa is tied to the port you name (e.g. "Noi Bai Int'l Airport - Ha Noi"). Landing at a different airport with the wrong port on the visa creates a problem fast track cannot fix.
- Reapply rather than wait. If an application is stuck past 10 days, a fresh clean application often lands faster than the correction loop.
Where fast track fits (and where it does not)
Fast track is an airport service - it cannot influence visa approval. What it does: once your e-visa is granted, an agent meets you at the arrival gate and escorts you through the priority immigration lane, cutting a 45-90 minute queue to about 10-15 minutes. If the e-visa itself is still pending, fix the visa first - no airport service can substitute for it.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Vietnam e-visa take to process?
Officially 3 working days. In practice 3-5 working days for clean applications; up to 10 days or a correction request if the photo or name order is off, or if submitted before a holiday.
Can I get a Vietnam e-visa faster than 3 working days?
There is no official express option. The practical speed-up is submitting a technically clean application early so it is not returned for correction.
Why is my e-visa still processing after a week?
Usually a photo failing automated checks, a name-order mismatch, a holiday pause, or manual review. Check status with your registration code; past 10 days, reapply cleanly.
My e-visa is pending and my flight is in 2 days - what now?
You cannot board without the visa. Keep checking the portal (approvals sometimes land last-minute), call the Immigration Department hotline, or move the flight. Fast track cannot replace a visa.
