The honest numbers
| Arrival window | Typical immigration wait |
|---|---|
| Early morning bank (5-8am) | 45-75 min |
| Midday quiet (10am-3pm) | 20-40 min |
| Evening bank (7-10pm) | 45-75 min |
| Late night (after 11pm) | 15-30 min |
| Fast track, any window | ~10-15 min |
These are immigration-only times at Terminal 2 - add baggage claim and customs and a "normal" arrival takes 60-90 minutes door to curb on a bad window.
Why the queue has two peaks
Noi Bai's international schedule is bimodal:
- The 5-8am bank - European long-hauls (London, Paris, Frankfurt, Doha, Dubai) land within a tight window. Several thousand passengers hit the same hall within an hour.
- The 7-10pm bank - Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, Bangkok and other East Asian flights arrive in a dense evening wave.
Between the banks the hall is manageable. Land outside them and you can be through in half an hour.
What makes your wait longer than the table
- Visa-on-arrival approval letter - you must stop at the Landing Visa counter first for the sticker, a second queue that adds 20-40 minutes at peak.
- Document problems - a missing e-visa printout or a passport validity question sends you aside while the line continues.
- Weekends and holidays - Tet and Vietnamese public holidays stack domestic and international peaks on top of each other.
- Seating position - arriving at the hall with two other wide-bodies vs 15 minutes after them is the difference between 30 and 60 minutes.
How to estimate your own wait
- Check your scheduled landing time against the two banks above.
- Add 20-40 minutes if you are on a visa-on-arrival letter instead of an e-visa.
- Add a margin for Tet/holiday travel dates.
- Anything over ~45 minutes is where standing in the hall after a long flight starts to genuinely hurt - that is the threshold where fast track earns its price.
Cutting it to 10-15 minutes
Airport fast track is the only reliable skip at Noi Bai - Vietnam does not offer a free tourist priority lane. An agent meets you at the gate, handles Landing Visa paperwork if you need it, and walks you through the priority immigration lane. Frequently asked questions
How long is the immigration queue at Hanoi airport?
30-60 minutes typically at Noi Bai T2; 45-75 minutes during the 5-8am and 7-10pm arrival banks. VoA letter holders can add a second 20-40 minute queue.
What are the worst times to arrive?
The two daily banks: 5-8am (European flights) and 7-10pm (East Asian flights). Late morning/early afternoon is usually the calmest.
Does an e-visa make the queue shorter?
A little - you skip the Landing Visa desk. But the main immigration queue is where most of the wait is, and e-visa holders join it like everyone else.
Is there any way to skip the queue?
Fast track - agent meets you at the gate and escorts you through the priority lane, ~10-15 minutes total. There is no free priority lane for tourists at HAN.
Compare with the south: Ho Chi Minh City airport immigration time - SGN's queues are worse. Also see how long the e-visa itself takes.
